White Paper Abstract:
Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Smart Grid technology are propelling utility companies into the future with next generation systems empowering them to examine and optimize their systems. However, the two-way communication channel between the Smart Grid and the IT data processing facility is increasing system complexity, making it susceptible to security breach. These developments have prompted regulatory bodies to set down standards for security, which are likely to get more complex and stringent with the widespread use of AMI that exposes utility companies to malicious attacks. Addressing these threats, Wipro's AMI and Smart Grid security framework adopts a risk management methodology, addresses the entire SDLC and ensures security requirements are identified by a methodical assessment of security risks. The approach identifies the security domains in a Smart Grid / AMI end-to-end infrastructure and balances investment against the business impairment likely to result from security failures. The effectiveness of the framework was validated when Wipro won the 2010 Best Product & Service Award in the Application Security Solution Category.
