This document tells the story of one Cisco customer that compared the power and cooling costs of a discrete LAN and SAN design for its 1650-server data center expansion with a Cisco® Unified Fabric supported by Cisco Nexus® 5000 Series Switches. The customer achieved a 41 percent savings in power and cooling costs by implementing a Unified Fabric, amounting to a savings of US$75,114 per year. The Unified Fabric required only one-third the number of network adapters, and the reduced number of access-layer switches that were required freed up rack space equivalent to 172 servers.
