Xtended White Paper

White Paper Abstract:

Over the past several years, voice service providers have spent millions migrating from TDMbased
networks to next-generation IP technology. However, they have not updated their
development and distribution methods. While moving to IP has made network operations more
efficient, closed systems and mass marketing continue to stifle innovation. From the end-users’
point of view, phone service is still just phone service. Until service providers find a faster, more
cost-effective way to add value, they will be stuck with nothing to sell but commodity services at
commodity prices.

Taking a page from the Web 2.0 playbook, BroadSoft XtendedTM offers service providers a new
approach to creating value. In the Web 2.0 world, systems are open and innovation trumps
tradition, leading to a steady stream of exciting new applications. Moreover, end-users are free to
deploy third-party “mashups” that combine applications from a diverse range of sources and
create new value almost overnight. If service providers adopted the Web 2.0 model, they could
better leverage not only their own resources but also the creativity of end-users and third-party
developers.
